an enquiry concerning the principles of morals d hume David

Hume’s ethical thought grapples with questions about the relationship between morality and reason, the role of human emotion in thought and action, the nature of moral evaluation, human sociability, and what it means to live a virtuous life. David Hume maintains that moral distinctions are derived from feelings of pleasure and pain of a special kind, and not, as advocated by many Western philosophers since Socrates – from reason. Working from the empiricist principle that the mind is essentially passive, Hume argues that reason alone can never prevent or produce any action or affect. But since morality refers to actions and affections, it cannot be based on reason. David Hume, an 18th century philosopher, stated that morality is based on sentiments rather than reason. He concluded this after he developed his “theory” of knowledge which stated that everything we could know was observable by the senses — he was a naturalistic philosopher. He then looked at situations in which he thought that there was an obvious “wrong” and he tried to identify the “matter of fact” vice in the situation.

A Treatise of Human Nature e-bok av David Hume

I will first speak about why Hume believes reason and passion don't contradict each other. Essays, Moral, Political, and Literary (1758) is a two-volume compilation of essays by David Hume. Part I includes the essays from Essays, Moral and Political, plus two essays from Four Dissertations. The content of this part largely covers political and aesthetic issues. Moral sense theorists (or sentimentalists), such as David Hume, are the key opponents of moral rationalism. In Book 3 of A Treatise of Human Nature and in An Enquiry Concerning the Principles of Morals (EPM), Hume argues (among other things) that reason and emotions (or the "passions" as he often calls them) are quite distinct faculties and David Hume (d. 1776) also was heavily influenced by mechanical atomism and nominalism.

He concluded this after he developed his “theory” of knowledge which stated that everything we could know was observable by the senses — he was a naturalistic philosopher. For Hume, the line between the moral and non-moral is far blurrier. He frequently assimilates moral judgment to “taste” or judgments about beauty and deformity (Gill 2007), and he explicitly argues against the strict separation of moral virtues from other personal qualities such as a quick wit or even good looks (T 3.3.4–5). David Hume maintains that moral distinctions are derived from feelings of pleasure and pain of a special kind, and not, as advocated by many Western philosophers since Socrates – from reason.
